Gallery MAR is delighted to host “Mountain Love Song,” a joint exhibition featuring the multidisciplinary talents of actress, artist, and activist Katherine Heigl and her husband, artist and musician Josh Kelley. This captivating showcase opens January 22nd, 2025 and runs for three weeks, coinciding with the excitement of the Sundance Film Festival, making it a must-visit for art and film lovers alike.
Katherine Heigl, known globally for her roles in television and film, has also cultivated a passion for visual arts. Her work spans mixed media, incorporating acrylics, oils, pastels, and textured elements like handmade fibers and paper. Reflecting on her artistic evolution in an interview with Gallery MAR, Heigl shared, “It started as a playful exploration but became a deeply fulfilling practice.”
Heigl’s work is a celebration of experimentation and texture. Her mixed media pieces layer handmade papers, charcoal, oil pastels, and paint to create rich, multidimensional artworks. Heigl explains, “mixed media allows me to combine all the techniques I’ve learned into something uniquely my own.” Her artistic style, while still evolving, exudes a cinematic quality, evoking drama, moodiness, and ethereality. Through layers of expressive texture and gestural applications of media, Heigl imbues each piece with a sense of energy and movement. Every subject on her canvas feels on the cusp of vitality, as if preserved in an ephemeral moment in time before animating once more.
Living in Utah, Heigl draws profound inspiration from the region’s stunning mountains and the natural beauty surrounding her home. Her textured and moody style mirrors the layers of the land she admires daily. Of her beloved Utah home, Heigl muses, “For me, it’s just a sanctuary and a safe haven where I can really decompress. I can think clearly and find some peace and quiet. The stillness of these mountains around us has just soothed my soul. When you’re in the hustle and in the hubbub for so long, you forget that you kind of need that. It’s like a living meditation for me to be here.” The ethereal nature-inspired works she creates pay homage to these cherished mountain views and the wildlife within them, celebrating Utah’s tranquility and grandeur.
Complementing Heigl’s textural and nature-inspired works, Josh Kelley brings his expertise in leather artistry. Kelley’s intricate designs range from full-scale saddles to extreme embossed leather pieces, blending traditional craftsmanship with a modern sensibility. “His confidence and artistry inspire me,” Heigl remarked. “We’re thrilled to share this moment together.”
The exhibition also highlights Heigl’s and Kelley’s unwavering commitment to animal welfare. All proceeds from the show will benefit the Jason Heigl Foundation, a non-profit she co-founded to combat animal cruelty. This duality—her artistic exploration and advocacy—defines Heigl’s creative vision. Whether depicting animals or landscapes, her work reflects her belief in the interconnectedness of nature, art, and compassion. “Art is my way of amplifying that message,” she explains, “There’s no other heartbeat like our animals—they bring so much joy and deserve our protection.”
The exhibition’s timing with Sundance adds another layer of creative allure and excitement, situating it in the epicenter of independent creativity. Visitors can experience the vivid landscapes, striking wildlife, and soulful connections embodied in Heigl and Kelley’s works while supporting a meaningful cause.
“Mountain Love Song,” premiering January 22nd at Gallery MAR, promises to be an inspiring and heartfelt showcase of nature, creativity, and advocacy. Visit the gallery during the Sundance Film Festival or check out our website to explore this exhibition and support its inspiring cause.
